Continuing Rehabilitation Education  


The Human Resource Development and Training Department organised a two day offline workshop on "Teaching methods for Teaching children in an Inclusive Elementary school - Rehabilitation Council of India - CRE" on 19 & 20 January 2024.


50 Special Educators participated in the workshop and benefitted from the excellent presentations by different faculties on topics  such as "Differentiated Teaching - UDL " by  Dr. Preeti Mathur - Head of Counselling, DPS North Bangalore " Play Therapy"  by Mrs. Alphonsa Joseph, Associate Professor & HOD Psychology, "Multi Sensorial Teaching" by Mrs Lakshmi Hariharan, Madras Dyslexia Association "Montessori Method" by Ms Jeta Kumar, Montessori Trained teacher,  Legal aspects pertaining to Education Sector (RPWD, NEP) Mrs Shoba Sundar, Program Director, Spastics Society of Karnataka

Field Trips 

Annual Field trips of different units of SSK 

Children from the Joyful Learning Centre and Sub Centre at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health visited "Rangoli Gardens" A modern village, which brings an authentic village life experience. 

Children from Ramanagaram Unit visited Janapada Loka. The main attraction of Janapada Loka is the folks arts museum, which plays host to artefacts belonging to the folk culture, along with different instruments of music, agriculture and farming. 

Children from Doddabalpura and Devanahalli Units visited Koti Lingeshwara temple at Kolar.  The highlight of the temple is that the tallest Shivalinga in the world is installed along with 90+ lakh of other Shivalinga of different sizes.

Children from Centre for Special Education visited "Prani" - The Pet Sanctuary is an one of its kind experimental educational park that facilitates interactions that involve observation,  touch, feel, build among other experiences.  Children were thrilled and excited to touch animals such as rabbit, snake, iguana, mouse, birds, etc.  It was an amazing experience to the children. They had a wonderful time with the animals.

Part of educational trip,  a group 10 children visited post office to learn the functions of post office.  They bought stamps to affix on the cover of a greetings card made for their friends.  They went back to the post office to post the card. 

A group of 20 children visited "ISCKON" temple, Bangalore.  Children were well received by the temple authorities and arranged special darshan for our children.  After the darshan, delicious lunch was provided to the children

A group of 30 children went to an exclusive multisensorial disabled friendly  park which is situated inside the "Cubbon Park" , developed by Mindtree, in association with Bal Bhavan and Smart City. Children were so happy  and surprised to see the various kinds of play equipment such as swings, slides, see saws, tunnels to go through, merry-go round, rock climbing and many more which is specially made with adaptations so that they can play without any hassle-free.   The swing which can accommodate a child with wheel chair was the highlight.  All wheel chair children had the swing experience.    Every child had fun and enjoyed their day thoroughly.  he Pet Sanctuary is an one of its kind

Christmas celebrations


Christmas is the festival which inspires the spirit of sharing and caring.  The birth of Jesus story was displayed by the students. The cheerful Christmas greetings as the students danced to the melodious tunes of ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘ We wish you a merry Christmas and many more. The dazzling entry of Santa Claus inside the classrooms added to the joy and excitement of the students. The boundless joy of celebrating the festival was visible on the faces of all the children. It was a joyous and amusing programme for everyone. 


Children had a wonderful Christmas celebrations with the staff  of  "Cushman & Wakefield".

Kalaangana 2024


 The 17th Annual Kalaangana Festival was held on the 10, 11, & 12 January, 2024.  It is  a Cultural Festival of Art, Yoga, Fancy Dress, Dance and Music for differently abled children Organized by Information & Resource Centre (IRC) a unit of Sri Sharada Peetam, Sringeri. There were around 48 schools participated this year.

From Spastics society of Karnataka, around 50 children aged between 10 to 18 years  with different kinds of disability took part in the event.  SSK received a "Special Prize" for overall events and children got medals in Art, Dance and Music.  

The highlight of this year fest is "Inclusive Fashion Walk".  The children were given a red sash with "superstar" written in golden colour, highlighting the importance of including neurotypical children to foster a more inclusive environment for the neurodivergent participants.  Children walked holding hands either with their siblings or classmates or friends.

Ms.Priyadarshini, a student from IVSTC got "Outgoing Student Award" who is currently working in "Mitti Cafe".   Mr.Murthy, ancillary staff from SSK got  best "Caregiver award". Mrs.Shobanadevi got "Special Educator Award".

SHAPES

ALL for one, One for ALL


Spastics Society of Karnataka celebrated Sports Day on December 16, 2023.   The theme of the event was “SHAPES”.

The event had its grand opening with glorious and well-synchronized march past by receiving the Chief Guest, Special Guests and other invitees.

The Drill event involving mass student participation which sprinkled on the field, an extravaganza of colours and vibrancy of their props of different shapes such as circle, square, heart, triangle and pentagon was wonderful and spectacular to experience the performance.

Next was Relay Race.  The children beautifully exchanged the shapes and numbers from one end to other by pairing with their partners and tried to reach as fast as they could.

Parachute event was attracted by its vibrant colours.  It was a fun filled game which promotes cooperative play among children.

Obstacle race had its challenge to showcase the physical ability of the children by bending their body and walking on the balancing beam.

Tiny tots from IGICH played the game of picking the correct shapes and sorting the shapes. Children from Devanahalli played a game to identify the shapes.

Other games like  Kabaddi, Throwball, Football, and shadow badminton was beautifully showcased by the children of Learner Centre and IVSTC.  Cycling performance was done by Harsha and Hari.

NO CHILD was left out. All the children went home with a gold medal winner with a happy smile on their face.   

There was also a game for parents, volunteers and staff of SSK conducted by the volunteers of Decathlon. 

It was an excellent team work by each and every staff of SSK, support of parents and volunteers which made the Sports day successful.

Students Vikram and Ashwini guided by Ms.Sara Singh compered the entire programme. The programme ended with vote of thanks.

   Cerebral Palsy Day

Mrs. Padma Janardhanan, Programme Director and Mrs. Sarala T R, Coordinator, Educational Services facilitated a sensitisation programme for the caregivers of children with cerebral palsy organised by Govindram Varma Charitable Trust in association with Dept. of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR) & DEIC, Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hubballi; Indian Academy of Cerebral Palsy to commemorate National Cerebral Palsy Day. Sincere thanks to Dr. Anand Varma, Associate Professor, Dept. of PMR, KIMS for his support.

  

Convocation

The Human Resource Development and Training Unit held its annual Convocation for batch of 2022-23 on 2nd December. The Chief Guest Bro. Dr. Mathew Panathanath, Founder Director- Montfort College Principal- Montfort Institution of Advanced Studies and Guest of Honour, Shri H N Suresh, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan distributed certificates to 78 successful trainees. The unit conducted eight courses certified by Rehabilitation Council of India, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Spastics Society of Karnataka.



International Day of Persons with Disability           December 3, 2023 

To mark International Day of Persons with Disability, children participated and won prizes in painting, cultural and sports events organised by Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Government of Karnataka.  The events were held on 24th November and 28th November. A team of children, parents and staff attended the Department’s function at Kanteerava Stadium on 3rd December.  


Sur Tarang - November 18, 2023

SSK's annual music event Sur Tarang was held on 18th November at Indiranagar Sangeeth Sabha, Purandara Bhavan. 

Singers, Vidya Venkat and Zaheer enthralled the audience with songs from super-hits  of Kannada, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil films. The event is even more special for SSK, this being Vidya Venkat is a senior special educator. 

Pooja Vaidyanath, Playback Singer and Chief Guest spoke about her journey in music with a soulful song for the audience and spent precious time with the staff and parents. 


 Children's Day - November 17, 2023

SSK celebrated Children's Day event on 17 November 2023.  Our ever enthusiastic team of special educators, teachers and trainees planned a memorable event for the children. They received a loud applause for the delightful dances and songs; a surprise fashion walk by the ancillary staff was very entertaining; games by trainees kept the children on their toes; complete with a mime made the children very happy.   




                  Educational Visit to Forest of Life Festival            at Azim Premji University - November 4, 2023

40 students from Learners' Centre visited Azim Premji University, Sarjapur, Bangalore to attend the "Forest of Life Festival -  a climate festival that celebrates the joy of nature.  This was a good learning experience for the students; they shared their experiences about nature and its preservation as well as the festival.  

 

Ayudha Pooja celebrations at SSK

Ayudha Pooja and Saraswati Pooja was celebrated at our Indira Nagar campus and outreach centres - Ramanagaram, Devanahalli, Doddaballapura with our Management and staff members. Poojas were offered to transport vehicles and  different units at school premises that connote a divine force which works behind to perform well for the entire school. Goddesses Saraswathi and Durga were worshipped by offering puffed rice, fruits and sweets to celebrate good over evil. Puffed rice and sweets were distributed to all. 


Swachhata Pakhwada - Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)            October 2, 2023

To mark Gandhi Jayanti, SSK's teachers, children and parents participated in the program - Swachhata Pakhwada, organised by Swachha Bharat Mission, Govt. of India. 

SSK's staff at outreach location at Devanahalli General Hospital and Sub-Centre at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health enthusiastically cleaned the surroundings.  

Our thanks to State Bank (SBI) of India for choosing the Indiranagar campus for their cleanliness drive.  Along with our staff, around 100 SBI staff members from different branches including the Chief General Manager;  Regional Manager and Branch Managers actively took part in the cleanliness drive.  

National Cerebral Palsy Day - October 3, 2023

National Cerebral Palsy Day was organized on 3rd October, 2023 with a workshop on Management of children with Cerebral Palsy.  The speakers included  Dr. Gautam Kodikal, Orthopedic Surgeon & Medical Director, SSK;  Dr. Sudha N.M, Consultant Ophthalmologist; Dr. Rudra Prasad, Orthopedic Surgeon, Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health; and  Dr. Vykunta Raju, Head of Dept. Pediatric Neurology at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health. 

The workshop was well attended by parents and staff members; trainees, volunteers and interns.  

Visit to LTI-MindTree - September 14, 2023

20 children along with their vocational instructors visited the campus of LTI-MindTree for a Diya painting activity with the employees. The outcome was an array of colourful diyas painted with much interaction and collaboration. The sumptuous lunch completed a memorable day for the children of SSK.  

Educational Industrial Visit - August 31, 2023

18 students from Centre for Special Education visited Dairy Delight Ice cream Factory Thursday, 31st August 2023.  Students received an orientation on the process of making ice-cream, packaging and storage.  They participated in packing and sealing stick ice-creams and cold storage at 25 degree for a minute. A cone ice-cream for each was the highlight too. A memorable educational trip.    

Ganesh Chathurthi Celebrations

The auspicious Ganesh Chaturthi festival was celebrated on 19th  September with  great enthusiasm. Ganapathi was installed and  pooja  performed by our Staff.   Children were showing their happiness and  devotion by depicting dance and songs of Ganesha. 







Teachers Day - September 5, 2023

Teachers' Day  was celebrated on 5th September with fun filled activities by students and teachers. Cultural activities; games, quiz and a sumptuous lunch for the staff were the highlights of a meaningful day.  








Onam Celebrations

Onam, the harvest festival  of Kerala was celebrated on  29th August 2023. Children brought petals of different colour flowers from home and were engaged in making a colourful flower Rangoli – ‘Pookalam’. The flower Rangoli was a collaborative activity of all the staff members of the school. The huge colourful flower carpet adorned the quadrangle of Centre for Special Education. 

Special Educator Vinaya Varghese narrated the  story of  Onam festival to the children and  the Thiruvathirakali dance was performed by staff and trainees. Janmashtami was celebrated on September 6, 2023.  Children were happily playing the "Dahi Handi"  game.





Independence Day

SSK celebrated 77 years of Indian Independence Day  on 15th August, 2023.  The Chief Guest Dr. Prahalad Kumar A, Medical Superintendent of Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, Bangalore received the salute of the March Past and hoisted the National flag.  Cultural programmes were performed by children from all the units of SSK.  







International Yoga Day

Students Balamurali, Ananya, Saisha, Niresh and Nethaji of Vocational Unit represented SSK at International Yoga Day at Hyderabad to create a world record of maximum Divyangjan performing Yoga. 

A special assembly to commemorate World Yoga Day on June 21 with information on benefits of Yoga on the body and mind and it's origin in India was  presented.  Demonstration of asanas to soothing music in harmony and synchronization was performed by students.





World Environment Day 


World Environment day was celebrated on June 5 during the Assembly.   Children made posters to spread awareness about the need to protect the environment and the ways to do it by demonstrating through a small skit on saving water, ban on usage of plastics etc.







Certification Function - April 10, 2023 


Demystifying Sexuality is a programme on gender studies and creating safer spaces for students and individuals developed by Enfold Proactive India. Four special educators (Arti Raina, Nandita Reddy, Sarala T, Sarah Singh) from SSK are being trained as Master Trainers by Enfold Trust in a 3 year training program. 


As a part of their practical training they successfully conducted two batches of 30 hours each for staff members, trainees pursuing RCI Diploma course and parents under the supervision and guidance of master trainers from Enfold Trust. 


34 participants of the second batch received their certificates at the Certification ceremony held on 10th April, 2023.  Participants shared their experiences of what they learnt and how their perspectives have changed. Certificates were handed over by Mrs. Rukmini Krishnaswamy, Priya Rao and Padma Janardhanan.







World Autism Awareness Day - April 2, 2023


Two events marked the commemoration of World Autism Day at SSK. 



Mrs. Rukmini Krishnaswamy, Director - Technical Services, SSK was honoured by Autism Society of India for her decades of expansive work in the field of Autism and special education. 








Summer Camp at SSK - April 11 - 28, 2023


Rainbow Summer camp organized from 11th-28th April was organized on the principles of Inclusion where students with different disabilities worked together to help each other, to show care for each other, to express and understand each other by providing spaces to accept themselves with joy, happiness and dignity. Students learnt new skills to support their vocational and life skills, creativity and confidence - 

The camp will be a cherished memory for the students, staff and volunteers. 

Kalakriti - March 24,25 - 2023

The annual Art exhibition was inaugurated by Shri H N Suresh, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Dr. Gomathy Gowda, Principal, College of Fine Arts, Chitrakala Parishath at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The show showcased the artwork of 80 students and two solo alumni artists - Sheeba and Kanchan Srinivasan. Thanks to Vidya Venkat, HOD of the Academy of Fine Arts at SSK for curating the show. 



Open Day - March 2023

Open Days at SSK at the end of the academic year give our parents an opportunity to be part of the progress of their children; it's a time to be witnessing the many facets of development of children and an affirmation of the planning of goals for each child through their individual educational programmes.  The month of March marked Open Days at the Centre for Special Education and Vocational Training Unit. Display of children's work; their presentations through public speaking, dance & music; interactions of parents and staff marked the series of open days.    



Educational Field trips - March 2023

Multisensorial disabled friendly park, Bal Bhavan, Cubbon Park - 15.02.2023 – The younger groups went to the Disabled friendly park in Bal Bhavan that was recently inaugurated. It was an exciting visit where all the children despite their challenges were able to fully participate in all the activities like adapted swings, slides, see saws, tunnels to go through, adapted rock climbing and many more. Every child had fun, tried many activities for the first time, even the parents who accompanied and the teachers were surprised and fascinated to see the various recreational adaptations made.

A group of 40 children in the age group of 15 to 20 years went to Rangoli Gardens. Rangoli Gardens is a modern village which captures Karnataka's distinct rural life in all its quaint glory. Its a  village set up sculptural journey into the economy, food habits, cultural traditions, religious events, recreations, and living conditions of Karnataka.  It has innumerable paintings, pictures, visuals, and eco-parks, all envisioned and crafted artistically by exceptionally skilled people . Children were excited to see a village in between the city and thrilled to experience Tonga Ride, Magic show and the art of pottery by experiencing the sensory touch of clay.  It was certainly a memorable experience for all the children.


A group of 20 students visited Baiyappanahalli Railway Station, which was recently built with modern amenities and modelled like an airport. Children could use the facilities at the AC waiting room, see the ticket counter, use the elevator, watch the moving train with passengers. They were also taken inside a stationed train to get the experience of sitting inside a train. They walked down the ramp to another platform was interesting as they could see pictures of the history of Bangalore lined on both the sides of the ramp.  It was a memorable trip and children cooperated well in the new place.

Women's Day Celebrations - March 2, 2023

Women's Day was celebrated with six professionals being honoured by Britannia Industries for their outstanding contribution to SSK and the birthdays of the March born staff led by Technical Director, Mrs. Rukmini Krishnaswamy. Our salute to Kairali Nair, Sarita Mehra, Mala Danabalan, Rajeshwari, Sumithra and Padma Janardhan our Women Achievers. 

Kairali Nair, special educator, teacher, guide has been responsible for introducing NIOS in SSK and in many other schools in Bangalore. She is instrumental in starting the inclusive education unit - Learners' Centre in SSK. She has untiringly liasoned with government officials time and again for fruitation of many projects. She continues to train teachers, scout for donation and has mentored many parents and children alike.  

Sarita Mehra, an able teacher, counsellor and blessed with an acumen for business. Sarita is credited for the successful inception and running of the profitable production units of our bakery and canteen services.  She has also counselled and guided parents and children at the Command Hospital as part of our outreach programs. 


Sumithra G R, Program Director-CBR Services is a special educator responsible for the early intervention programs; developing sub centres and at outreach locations. Sumithra is a brilliant trainer & has untiringly travelled the length and breadth of Karnataka to implement many community based programs. She has been an able guide & mentor to her colleagues, a source of hope to parents & children alike. The unit at IGICH is one of her many pioneering efforts which is very successful. 


Mala Danabalan as a soft spoken and dedicated parent professional, a teacher, counsellor and excellent parent took over the reins of the non formal education in Centre for Special Education to build a strong foundation. Mala is an important pillar of the Psycho Educational Unit with deep understanding of children's learning abilities.  


Padmavathi A V is a parent professional who has swum many a choppy waters of life and come up trumps. Under her guidance the Centre for Special Education has grown into a strong service unit. She is an amazing mix of compassion and caring practicality and pragmatism. She is truly a team player who has been a source of strength to not only the children she has taught but also to parents and all her colleagues.

Rajeshwari Kumar is an administrator, special educator and thanks to her there is a smooth flow of interactions, meetings between our director and members of SSK, board member, teachers parent or other visitors. Nothing misses her eye as far as administrative tasks are concerned.

  

Ramanagaram Unit at the newly inaugurated District Hospital  - March 2, 2023

Ramanagaram Unit shifted services to the premises of the newly constructed District Hospital. SSK thanks the District Surgeon Dr. Padma and her medical team; Dr. Shashirekha Priyadarshini – Paediatric Nodal Officer, Nutrition Rehab Centre for the support extended to the SSK team as a rehabilitation partner to provide free and quality services to children with special needs. We thank the team - Program Manager, Chand Pasha, Asma, Banu, Shashikala, Umraz and Nagashree under the guidance of Technical Director, Mrs. Rukmini Krishnaswamy and senior professionals for their dedication in developing the unit as one of the successful community outreach program of SSK. 

International Day Celebration - February 4, 2023

The mega event, International Day was celebrated on February 4th, 2023 at SSK with the objective of bringing fun into learning; remove barriers in facilitating inclusion. Each educational unit of SSK adopted a country to explore through the academic year, its geography, culture, language, flora fauna etc culminating in a presentation of the project to parents, guests and mainstream schools. India, Egypt, South Africa, Mexico, USA and Japan were the countries explored with great enthusiasm by teachers and children. The programme began with a parade of all the countries, a cultural programme and the exhibition. Visitors were greeted with an explosion of colours, information, talent, creativity and hard work in the form of displays and models.  Traditional costumes worn by staff made it all the more interesting. It was a complete sensorial experience that took us on a journey around the world. The event was a grand success and one that will be remembered for a long time.  

  

Siblings Day at SSK - January 21, 2023

A long time dream of Centre for Special Education of bringing children and their siblings together came true.  Trooping into the hall were the sisters and brothers of our wondrous special children. Amidst lots of sharing and laughter, we had a peek into the beautiful minds of the siblings.  An informative and enjoyable day for our children with fun games organized by Mrs. Meenakshi, MSW.  Technical Director Mrs. Rukmini Krishnaswamy and Consultant Developmental Pediatrician, Dr. Prafulla shared their thoughts with the children and  their siblings.  Each in their own way expressed what they felt and how they viewed their siblings while speaking about their strengths. 

Friendly Football Tournament                     January 10, 2023

Children of SSK and Ananya Tust came together to play a friendly football match on January 10, 2023. This gave them  an opportunity to get to know each other as equal peers.

Stall at Rotary Club Annual Convention   January 21, 2023

SSK participated in the Rotary Club Annual Convention alongwith other NGO's by keeping a stall of the products made during skill training.  

Christmas Celebrations -  December23, 2022

Christmas brings cheer and love and we celebrated it with the same fervour, spreading the message of love and joy among our children.  There was a carol presented by our teachers.  

International Day of Persons with Disabilites - December 3, 2022

Our children participated in the art, cultural and sports events arranged to commemorate the day organised by the Dept of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens.  SSK had the privelege of displaying learning and vocational materials at the stall at Kanteerava Stadium as well as interact with Hon. Chief Minister, Shri. Basavaraj Bommai.  Our gratitude to Director, Directorate for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Smt. Latha Kumari for wearing the eco-friendly jewelery made by our trainees of the Vocational Unit for the State function.

Children's Day - November 14, 2022

Children's Day is always a joyous event at SSK. Teachers and our student trainees staged a cultural show with music and dance; games and fun for the children.  Our alumni students visited SSK and made the day even more special. 


Convocation Ceremony - 

March 2021

On May 29th and 31st, 2021, a two-day vaccination drive was held for 230 students over the age of 18 and their carers. This wouldn't have been possible without the help of the Department of Disability Welfare and PHC doctors.
